Safe Work Practices
This article highlights the key requirements for the effective implementation of COR Element 3: Safe Work Practices, The proper development of Safe Work Practices (SWPs) is a key control in the mitigation of workplace injuries.
SWPs require an auditable, documented process that is easy to follow and can be quickly implemented. SWPs must be incorporated into the employee training program and follow strict guidelines for their approval and use in the workplace. They are usually reserved for simple job tasks but can also be incorporated to augment more formal work protection such as Lock Out & Tag Out (LOTO).
The current COR audit tool checks to confirm that an organization undergoing audit meets the required criteria for the implementation and use of their SWPs. A COR Auditor will focus on the following objectives to measure the effectiveness of this endeavor:
All current SWPs are documented and accurately reflect the scope of work activities that the organization undertakes;
All workers clearly understand the use and requirements of the SWPs and any rules governing their application;
Workers are provided adequate time and reference documentation for the review of SWPs as required;
Evidence of worker participation in the development of the SWPs is readily available.
Does your organization have SWPs that cover that instruct workers on your expectations for the safe execution of work? Are accidents occurring, where there is no documented SWP for the activities?
